PANKAJ Udhas was born at Jedpur, nearly 50 kilometers from Rajkot. He was born in a family of musicians. Pankaj started singing at the age of six and started his tabla lessons at the age of 10. His first public performance, at the age of 11, was in front of 5,000 spectators.
Pankaj carried his passion for music to St Xavier’s College in Mumbai, from where he graduated. He made a mark at the inter-college music competition and won the first prize in singing.
His first album of ghazals, Aahat, was released in 1980. The album became popular which gave him popularity as well as the confidence to move ahead. Many appreciated his soft voice and the new singer got place in the hearts of the audience. In a career spanning over 20 years, Pankaj has rendered many hit ghazals. He is responsible for changing the world of ghazals. The time he appeared, the masses had started to lose interest in this form of singing. He made this form of singing popular again.
The ghazal singer achieved many milestones in his career. He was the first to achieve Triple Platinum Status for his album Aafreen in 1986. He also received the K L Saigal award, and holds the distinction of being the first artist in India to have his voice on a CD. His ghazal from Naam, Chitti aayi hai, is loved by music lovers even nearly 15 years after its release. The song was also chosen as one of the 100 best songs of the millennium by the newspaper, Mid-day. Not only a ghazal singer, he has also sung a great number of songs for Hindi movies as a playback singer. A few days ago lyricist Javed Akhtar, launched a ghazal album of Pankaj Udhas, In Search of Meer, at China Garden in Mumbai.
