Although it was ”Doowutchalike” that kickstarted the Digital Underground’s phenomenal rise, and gave audiences their first taste of Shock G.’s affable alter ego, Humpty Hump, it was the second single from the Sex Packets album that cemented their position as the kings of modern funk. Dedicated to furthering the mission of George Clinton’s P-Funk empire, ”The Humpty Dance” is equally lighthearted and packed with a fierce funk beat, a combination whose volatility was proven as the song rocketed into the R&B Top Ten early the next year, even scoring the band a Pop #11 hit in an era when serious rap was still working its way into the mainstream. An immediate West Coast club smash, kids from Los Angeles to Oakland were “doing the Humpty Hump” a smooth groove that blended often barely-veiled lyrical innuendo with a diffused funk pop, and provided a needed corollary to the burgeoning gangsta rap scene. With the be-nosed Humpty Hump at the helm, though, this is fully a Digital Underground effort, even as it remains Humpty’s shining moment. It’s his braggadocio that really drives this song - because this is his world, his dance, his exploits reviled, and the real purpose of his nose revealed. ”The Humpty Dance” received a Grammy nomination for best Rap Performance and, although it didn’t scoop the statuette, it was still certified platinum and helped to change the face of rap.
